Industry's Key Concepts

Hollow glass products, such as bottles and carafes, are manufactured by pressing gobs of molten glass into shapes. A typical process is as follows: Molten glass is first conditioned in a Feeder mechanism, and then extruded, cut into gobs sized for the container to be formed, and fed into the forming mechanism via a distributor. In the forming mechanism, the glass is pressed into a mold, blown into shape, and removed via a take-out mechanism into a conveyor belt.

Modern glass forming machines use servo drives to provide precise control over the forming process, and to thus increase the quality of the glass while decreasing the amount of glass used and the time taken to produce the bottles. Reliability of the glass forming servo drives, operating in a very high-temperature environment, is a key issue. Component failures are extremely expensive due to the difficulties associated with stopping and starting a process involving molten glass.
